Ketika partikel energi foton dalam sinar matahari mengenai permukaan panel surya, energi tersebut diserap oleh sel fotovoltaik yang umumnya terbuat dari bahan semikonduktor seperti silikon.<\/p>\n<p>Energi dari foton ini kemudian melepaskan elektron dalam material tersebut, sehingga menghasilkan aliran listrik. Pada tahap ini, listrik yang dihasilkan masih berupa arus searah (DC).<\/p>\n<p>Namun, sebagian besar kebutuhan listrik di rumah dan industri menggunakan arus bolak-balik (AC). Oleh karena itu, arus DC tersebut akan dikonversi oleh <em>inverter<\/em> menjadi listrik AC agar dapat langsung digunakan.<\/p>\n<p>Ketika beberapa panel surya dihubungkan menjadi satu rangkaian (<em>solar array<\/em>), kapasitas produksi listrik akan meningkat, serta dapat disesuaikan dengan berbagai kebutuhan energi.
