Licensing the Land

EM Orka follows international best practices from other jurisdictions (Such as the U.S. and Europe), by entering into an initial license agreement with the landowner.  This license agreement is essentially a permission (Legally described as an "easement" or a "license") from the land-occupier that allows the project developer to access the land and conduct wind-measurement studies, as well as environmental and social impact assessments.

Land Ownership

The landowner retains full possession of their land for the duration of the resource assessment period. Upon completing our studies, if the site is suitable, the developer will then sign the previously-agreed lease agreement, but only for the small part of land necessary for the project (For infrastructure like roads and turbine foundations).  The remaining land between the equipment and roads will remain owned by the local landowners and may continue in use for activities such as agriculture.

Measurements of Wind Resources

Historically, reliable field measurement solutions for wind power use 100 meter weather masts which often require approval from aviation authorities, and after testing may have to be retired.  For our assessments, SoDAR technology is used initially, then at the permitting stage EM Orka installs a 50 - 80 meter weather mast. The wind measurement process is expected to last for 24 months to gather an accurate and reliable understanding of the wind resources in Garpsdalur.
