Understanding Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

BESS are devices that store electrical energy in batteries for later use, playing a crucial role in balancing supply and demand, providing backup power, and improving the efficiency and reliability of the electricity grid. The sphere of energy storage solutions is very versatile and can be implemented in a variety of contexts, from residential to industrial applications. In particular, these solutions facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, into the grid by storing excess energy generated during production peaks for use in periods of high demand or low production. 

Greenvolt Power is currently implementing energy storage solutions in its wind and solar farms discharged at a later time to provide grid services when necessary. 

There are several elements that go into building these systems other than just the battery, this includes inverters, control components and integrated sensors for monitoring its’ operations. 

However, the infrastructure is highly dependent on the type of batteries used since each type of battery has its own pros and cons: We use lithium-ion batteries due to their high energy density and lightweight design which makes them easier to transport and install.

Types of BESS Solutions:

Lithium-ion Batteries – The most widely used and mature battery storage system. They have a short lifespan (8 years), rapid recharge time, and can sustain energy for about two hours. Though primarily developed for EVs, they are still crucial for power grid applications. 

Lead-acid Batteries – Use of sulfuric acid, water, and lead for energy storage. They are ideal for solar power storage due to their gradual energy deployment and ability to be connected in series for higher capacity. 

Flow Batteries – Consist of two fluid-filled tanks generating electricity through electrochemical reactions. They can provide energy for up to 10 hours, last up to 30 years, and have an almost infinite cycle life. Though costly and requiring more space, they are environmentally friendly and safe. 

Each system offers unique advantages and is selected based on specific application requirements.​
