Energy transition and its challenges

The energy transition in Poland and across Europe is accelerating rapidly. According to the Polish Energy Market Agency, installed solar PV capacity exceeded 17 GW in 2024, while wind power reached 9 GW.

This is an impressive success but also a major challenge for the power grid. Renewable generation is intermittent and weather-dependent. Without flexible balancing tools, integrating further gigawatts of green energy will not be possible. Energy storage provides this flexibility.

Energy storage as the foundation of the transition

The International Energy Agency predicts that global energy storage capacity will increase fifteenfold by 2030. This shows that no economy can achieve climate neutrality without advanced energy storage infrastructure.

In Poland, the transmission system operator (PSE) forecasts the need for 4–6 GW of storage capacity by 2030 to ensure system stability and energy security.

Energy storage technologies

Lithium-ion batteries

The dominant solution for utility-scale and industrial projects, offering high efficiency (90%+) and fast response.

Flow batteries

Longer lifespan, suitable for large-scale and long-duration applications.

Hydrogen as an energy storage medium

Excess renewable energy can be converted to hydrogen via electrolysis, stored, and later used in power generation, industry, or transport.

Pumped hydro storage

A proven large-scale solution, though geographically limited in Poland.

Hybrid farms – synergy of renewables and storage

Hybrid farms combine wind, solar, and storage into one integrated system. They enable:

  • optimal use of grid connections,
  • reduction of energy losses,
  • round-the-clock clean power generation.

Greenvolt Power is actively developing hybrid projects in Poland and other European markets. By integrating solar, wind, and storage technologies, we provide clients with stable and reliable renewable energy.

Energy storage and energy security

In the context of the war in Ukraine and the European energy crisis, storage has become even more critical. It:

  • reduces reliance on fossil fuel imports,
  • stabilizes electricity prices,
  • strengthens economic resilience.

International examples:

  • California – the world’s largest battery storage plants stabilize the grid.
  • Australia – the “Big Battery” project cut network failure costs by millions of dollars annually.

Benefits for businesses and municipalities

Business benefits

  • peak shaving and reduced energy bills,
  • increased self-consumption from onsite PV,
  • meeting ESG requirements and improving corporate reputation.

Municipalities

  • greater energy independence,
  • integration with local renewable projects,
  • access to EU funds for green transformation.

Greenvolt Power – our approach to energy storage

Greenvolt Power, part of Greenvolt Group, develops utility-scale projects and integrates storage solutions in hybrid farms. With operations across Europe, we provide cutting-edge technologies and business models, including long-term PPAs.

Our goal is to build not only renewable farms but also complete energy ecosystems where energy storage plays a central role.

Greenvolt Power and the future of energy storage

Energy storage is the foundation of the energy transition. Without it, renewable integration, grid stability, and energy security cannot be achieved.

Greenvolt Power is at the forefront of this transformation, delivering projects that combine solar, wind, and storage technologies. With expertise and innovation, we create solutions that support not only the green transition but also the energy independence and stability Europe.
